A Word by the Translator

This book studies and reveals obscure truths and facts about Eckankar, Paul Twitchell, its founder, and the Eck Masters who followed him. By reading this book, one can see the flaws in the claims made by critics about Paul Twitchell and Eckankar. The author of this book, Doug Marman, has carefully studied these criticisms, along with the inner challenges they raise. He answers each one. But we should remember, as Doug says over and over again throughout this book: Each seeker must decide for himself what the truth is.

Although I now live in the USA, I grew up in Iran. However, I believe many Iranian Eckists, and those who have are now in touch with Eckankar in Iran, do not know the true details of these events and controversies surrounding Paul Twitchell and the Eck Masters after him. This is why, with all the rumors that have come from a book published by David Lane in the USA, I decided to translate The Whole Truth.

Although the purpose of translating this book is partially to explain the truth of what really happened, as an answer to the claims and sophistries published in David Lane’s book, it is the enlightening nature of this book, its insights, experiences and the many interesting dialogues that motivated me to deliver it to my fellow Iranians.

What I found in The Whole Truth is something far more than just an answer to David Lane’s criticisms. As we listen to a writer as he searches and dialogues, especially when he takes us to the deepest inner explanations of the path, all aimed at finding truth, we gain something beyond an accurate history of the spiritual legacy of Paul Twitchell. We also, ironically, discover a deeper understanding of Paul’s teachings. This is the real reason why I recommend this book to all dear readers.

The Whole Truth delivers valuable information about events and incidents in the early history of Eckankar, and it explains the subtle processes of the spiritual path of Eck. I believe much of this information will be new to Iranians. As a result, some of the events described in this book show new details that may be upsetting, because they are different from what you presumed took place. Remember, however, that this information is also bringing you closer to the truth. So this book can be a challenge, because we need to leave behind old ideas and attitudes, as we step into a new understanding.

I must say again that there is an abundance of knowledge and wisdom in this book about spirituality. In addition, it gives us a clearer picture of what really happened when Paul Twitchell first began writing and speaking about Eckankar, showing us the true legacy that he left us. When this book goes beyond this history and opens up gateways to the spiritual wisdom of the path of Eck, that is when, for me, it has been the most insightful.

My hope is that this translation delivers to the reader the whole message of this book.

Whenever footnotes incorporate the ideas of the translator, they end with this: (translator).

Some ideas and words of the author, Doug Marman, have been added that were not in the original text. These notes end with this: (As told to the translator by the author).

Some footnotes include the English spelling of names for better reference and study of the reader.

The font size of this book is bigger than usual. This is why this eBook has so many pages. The original English book is 544 pages, but the author recommended larger font size to make it easier to read on tablets and phones.

Lastly, I am deeply thankful to the author for his help throughout the translation of this book. In addition, I must thank two reviewers, who did not want their names mentioned, for their precious comments. There were errors in the first transcripts of this translation and, without their help, this book would not have attained its current state. The translation of this book took 3 years, however there may still be some minor wording errors for which I solicit the reader’s pardon.

In the hope that this book will open doors to a new era of spirituality for dear friends in Iran, I dedicate it to all Eck Masters, from the beginning of time to the present, who have carried the torch of truth.

  1. Dear Doug, Dear Arman
Thank you so much for this gift, this book. About 12 years ago I had read Dialogue in the age of criticism but reading The whole truth in Farsi let me know much more about who was Paul Twitchell.
    Thank you so much

  2. I am thankful for what you have done even though I am not an Iranian. Helping people to get what they need for spiritual growth is one of the most important things.
